The first SLHSMTA event was held on May 28, 2017 at The Fabulous Fox theatre.

Students from every participating school were represented in professionally choreographed Opening and Closing numbers. Nominees in the Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Actress categories performed in medleys with other nominees, and schools nominated for Outstanding Musical performed one production number from their show.

The event was a true celebration of high school musical theatre.
